[British Folk] Candida Pax – Day (1971)

Taking symbolic cues from the burnt-down candle ends of loner blues-psych, and also the soul searching rasp of post-hippie Christian salvation, Northern English group Candida Pax released Day in 1971 on the obscure Deroy Sound Service label (a studio and manufacturing facility that specialized in private-press deals for independent artists), and that was the last anyone heard of them. In the artwork, there’s a photo of the band where one member is not so subtly concealing a copy of the first Fleetwood Mac LP in his arms. The sight of a band literally wearing an influence as close to the sleeve as possible might worry more discerning listeners, but there’s enough earnest playing and haunted passages here to call it a very minor lost classic.

Sunforest was a short-lived psychedelic folk band formed in 1969 by Terry Tucker, Erika Eigen and Freya Hogue. They have recorded only one studio album, Sound of Sunforest under the Decca Records label. They are best known for their work on the soundtrack for A Clockwork Orange.

Sound of Sunforest is the first and only studio album by psychedelic folk group Sunforest.

Two tracks from the album, “The Overture to the Sun” and “Lighthouse Keeper” were re-recorded by the band to be used in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. The soundtrack album credits the tracks to Terry Tucker and Erika Eigen, respectively. The track “The Overture to the Sun” was also used by the american neofolk/martial-industrial band Blood Axis for their song “Lord of Ages”。

“Reissue of ultra rare album by legendary psych/folk band. Mystic dark and beautiful.Like most musically strong private pressings, this is ultra-rare and changes hands for vast sums of money. 200 copies were pressed originally and the album blends cover versions (Gershwin’s Summertime, Paul Simon’s I Am A Rock and Joni Mitchell and Tom Paxton compositions), traditional material and some originals with Prisoner the best of the small crop. Most tracks have an acoustic backing with twin female vocals。

THIRD EAR BAND originated from Canterbury and started out as a psychedelic band called THE GIANT SUN TROLLEY gaining residency in south-London clubs doing long and improvisations and eventually changing their names to THE HYDROGEN JUKEBOX, recording one live album as such with Sweeney’s percussions as scissor’s clipping noise (with the mike attached to them) as he progressively undressed completely his girlfriend by clipping her dress during the conert (cut-out were very “in” at that time). Having finished their concert recording they discovered all their equipment stolen. So by sheer coincidence and obvious necessity, they became an acoustic band taking the name THIRD EAR BAND.

The restoration completed now, though it was a bit noisy in places (rythmic clicks in some tracks) this album was a joy to work on, the songs holding my interest by their sheer musicality, to a degree that I missed some of the lesser scratches and clicks and had to go back over each track a few times. Steve Turner appears here with some of his earliest work, his higher register voice is so reminiscent of his classics like “Squid Jigging Ground” on “Jigging One Now” album, posted on THTM blog about a year ago, if he is new to you, well worth checking him out.
